In 2016 I did a drawing of a witchy version of my original character Emilia. I was particularly inspired by an artist called Fukari, who had just produced a witch drawing herself. I wanted (ok, I still want) to be as good as Fukari. I tried doing traditional inking like her picture (except at the time she was using like a Pentel brush pen, which I did not have), but it looked so crunchy when complete. I never did figure out if this was because of my pen, my paper, or my scanner resolution. Nevertheless I digitally coloured it, and uploaded it to Deviantart. I knew it wasn’t my best work. The hands were the thing that bugged me the most. I didn’t now the best way to render something like a hand that was turning invisible. Now that I’m uploading artworks to Redbubble, I’m going through my back catalog for inspiration, and I could see this artwork had potential. So I put the PSD file on my iPad and started fixing it. Below are some WIP shots. I completely redrew the line art, making modifications like a bigger chin, removing the hat feather, and altering the hairline. I also reworked the glowing light from her hands, letting it reflect off her face. The final product is, in my opinion, a significant improvement. ”Cast Me Away” is now available on Redbubble. There was some frantic editing and re-uploading of files when I realised that there was a smudge near the thumb of the girl, but that’s all fixed up now. Until next time,
Jess xx
