Let's look at how a simple concept - shortening web links - can make a big difference in a little nerd's life. I first found out about Bitly back when I was an obsessive Sims 2 player. (I’m still an obsessed fan, don’t worry, it’s just that I haven’t fit playing that game into my schedule in a long time. I used to be very involved..but that’s a story for another time!) Many download links for custom content for the game, like hairstyles and outfits, would be hidden behind little links with different names. (And then there were Adfly links, hiding content behind a timer and ads... much less of a fan of those!) Now, working on getting established in the online art world, I found myself with a lot of long, ungainly URLs like https://www.redbubble.com/people/jessicaamber/works/29601930-gemini-soul?asc=u that looked so bad when I pasted them into Tumblr or Facebook. What should I do? Research led me to finding Bitly once again. This nifty little site would take my heavy URL and replace it with a lovely short one, using whatever wording I liked after their domain name... as long as it hasn’t already been taken by someone else. Most of the ones I typed in worked though. Tonight, I was on the site, checking my Bitly dashboard to see the info they provide. For free, mind you, they provide so much! They tell you the number of clicks each link has gotten, as well as the grand total. Each link has a pie chart that tells you where the click came from on the web, and geographically. I also did some editing of my links, as I’d forgotten to give quite a lot of them titles, which makes browsing a little more difficult. I’m very happy with this company and website, and I hope that their analytics will help me achieve my goals.
- Jess xx This is not a paid sponsorship, I have not been contacted by Bitly, I just like the product.
