Why Would I Want To Do That?I have a 3DS but it doesn't feel realistic to buy all the games I want to try on it. With this method, I can try before I buy. Also, I already have an iPad, so that's no additional cost. And it feels pretty comfortable to game on the iPad. What Will You Need?1. A desktop or laptop computer, which is connected to the same WiFi as your iPad 2. An iPad 3. Citra 3DS Emulator software 4. Splashtop software 5. Unzipping software like WinRAR or 7zip (free) 5. A hex editor software (optional) Step 1: Download CitraCitra is the most advanced and best 3DS emulator currently available, and consistently being worked on and updated. You can download this program at https://citra-emu.org/download/ . It's currently available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Download and install the software. Step 2: Download System Archives and Shared FoldersSome 3DS games will work right out of the box with Citra, but a lot will require these certain files, 'System Archives and Shared Folders' to run correctly. Citra specify that these files should be ripped from an existing 3DS, and do not promote finding the files elsewhere. However, not everyone has the hardware or skills to do this. Luckily, there is an alternative. This YouTube video by Sloppy10FPS provides some instructions and a download link for the necessary files. That said, the files he provides have two caveats: 1. The location is set to Russain. In most cases this won't matter, but to be safe I'd want to change it to USA. (This is elaborated on in this Reddit thread). 2. There is an extra unneeded file in the dump, which contains the original user's Citra configuration. So that can be downloaded. And if you want to change from Russia and USA, that's where you'd need a hex editor. I used HxD, which is free. In the interest of making this process as easy as possible for you, I'm uploading the needed files with the 2 changes above for you. You can download it below (8.13MB):
Download this file and unzip it. Copy it's contents to the following directory (this path applies to PC users): C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\Citra and let the new files overwrite any existing ones. If you do want to dump your own 'System Archives and Shared Folders', the instructions for how to do so can be found on the Citra website. Please note that is is complicated, you need to have homebrew software on your 3DS. Step 3: Download the Game FileNow we're going to acquire a game to play. Citra-compatible games MUST be decrypted, so whatever site you go to for ROMs, ensure it says that it is decrypted, otherwise it will not work. For this example, we will download the game that I am currently playing, New Style Boutique 2: Fashion Forward, because I know it works. I'm super suspicious about file sharing links, and it's a shame there's usually not any reviews of whether they work. So I've done the dirty work and found this one. As far as my experience goes, it is a safe website. I downloaded it from the website Ziperto. They offer several mirrors, I picked OpenLoad [filesupload.org link is down, as well as 1Fichier]. Their download links do a redirect through shorte.st (shorten links to earn money) then through noriskdomain.com, which appears to make sure the link is safe. Click the button that says 'Show me results and take me to [url] domain'. Then click 'Take me to [ulrl]'. Download the file. Unzip it wherever you want to store your 3DS game files. Step 4: Test the GameOpen the game in Citra. If it runs, congratulations! Note that most games don't run on Citra as well as they do on an actual 3DS. Citra have a compatability list which lists a lot, but not all, 3DS games. Coincidentally, none of the Style Boutique games are listed. So let me summarise its performance for you, using my experience on a Asus laptop: * The music can run slow * The game can fluctuate between running smooth and slow. It's usually slower when the animated characters are doing things on screen. * One non-essential button made the game crash for me (the Help button within the cellphoine menu) I still absolutely consider the game playable though. If you agree, let's continue to the playing-on-iPad part! Step 5: Install SplashtopGet the Splashtop app on your iPad, and Splashtop Streamer for your computer (in the Splashtop Personal section. Works with Windows, Mac and Linux). Install the software, and use the same login information for both. Make sure both devices are connected to the same WiFi network. Then, run both programs. On the iPad, select your computer to connect to. You should now be seeing your computer screen on the iPad! Step 6: Play!Open Citra, open your game, and play! Suggestions: You may need to examine the Citra settings to know what game buttons correlate to keyboard buttons. Run Citra in fullscreen by pressing F11. In Splashtop, at the bottom on the screen there are 2 icons. One looks like a bar, and brings up various settings. The second brings up a keyboard. To ensure your touches on the screen act like touches, select the settings bar, then look at the 5th icon, which looks like a pointer. Conclusion I hope this tutorial helps you in being able to have fun playing 3DS games from the comfort of your lounge, without having to acquire a 3DS console or sit at your computer.
