As a freelance artist, it's critical that I share my artworks on many social media platforms to increase the number of potential clients eyeballs seeing it. There are so many apps these days that offer social media scheduling and mass posting, but frequently they come with caveats like a limited number of social media profiles that can be posted to before you need to pay up. In this article I'll be comparing the main contenders in a frank way. I am not sponsored by any of these companies, and will gladly recommend any free alternatives... if I can find them!
Features I Need
As an artist, here are the features of a social media management app that are most important to me:
Scheduling Posts: There are many times where making social media posts is not convienient. If I am out of town and away from my main computer where my artworks are stored. It makes sense to schedule artworks to be posted in those times where I can't manually do it. Mass Posting: At the moment I have social media profiles, on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. [Not to mention this blog, my personal website, my portfolio website, *puff puff*]. I want to reduce the effort I spend on posting social media content so those efforts can instead go towards artmaking. So being able to post to all those sites at once is super helpful. The more social media platforms that are supported by an app, the better. From my research, Tumblr is the least likely of the popular social media sites to be integrated with these apps, so that's one I'm really keeping an eye out for. Features I Don't Need
Features that do not matter to me include:
Multiple users: I work alone, and don't need anyone else logging in to manage my posts [and to be frank, if I did, I'd just let them use my login. Responding to messages: I have all the social media apps on my phone, I can respond that way wherever I am. That renders the messaging thing moot. RSS Feed: I don't really know anything about RSS.
This table shows a comparison of all the contenders, according to their free options and their cheapest plan.
Comparison Table
Other notes:
OneUp's second-cheapest plan is $10 USD per month for 10 profiles, which is very competitive against Hootsuite and Loomly. Jarvee must be installed on a Windows PC that is continually running. SummaryAsThe apps that had all the social media options I wanted (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram) were:
The free plan that offers the most social media channels is Later, with 4 out of the 5 that I wanted (excluding Tumblr). Considering that I am still in the fledgling stages of my business, I think it would be best for me to not incur the cost of subscribing to a social media management app. I will be trying out Later, and hopefully it suits my needs. Later has both Android and iOS apps, which suits me very well. Evaluating Later

Mass posting is in fact possible. It's clearly available on the web application by clicking the plus sign next to each social media icon. On the app, it was harder to find.] Later also has a feature called Quick Schedule, which allows you to drag-and-drop content onto your calender. But this has a caveat, which is, the scheduling doesn’t automatically post to Instagram; it simply prompts you to put the saved image into Instagram and copies the caption you've previously set, for you to manually paste in. So only semi-automated scheduling for Instagram, which is not desirable to me.
Alternative: Hootsuite
So now I’m back to an app I’ve dabbled with one or before... Hootsuite. The free plan does allow 3 social channels, so I’ve set up Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Tumblr and Pinterest will just have to be handled manually. But Hootsuite definitely offers the mass posting I need. It’s easy to create the posts. The only slight hiccup, which may be true of all the mass posting options available, is that if you are posting to multiple streams, the length of your text has to be shorter than the character limit for the smallest social media, which is usually Twitter with its 280 characters. So unless you manually make shorter posts for Twitter, your other social posts need to be brief.
I may write a more in-depth evaluation of Hootsuite once I have more practice with it.
